There isn’t one right answer. It depends on your budget and whether you think you’ll wear the dress again.

If you’re somewhere in the middle, don’t overlook secondhand shopping. Many maternity dresses are worn only once or twice, making them perfect candidates to buy gently used.

Do You Need a Maternity-Specific Dress?

Not always.

Many beautiful dresses aren’t labeled as maternity dresses at all. Styles with empire waists, stretchy fabrics, wrap designs, or relaxed fits often work wonderfully throughout pregnancy.

If you’re further along in your pregnancy or carrying multiples, you may appreciate the extra comfort of a maternity-specific dress.

The most important thing is choosing something that fits comfortably, gives your bump room to grow, and helps you feel like yourself.

How Long Should Your Dress Be?

If you ask me, the longer the better.

Floor-length dresses create beautiful movement and photograph especially well outdoors. As you walk, the fabric catches the breeze and adds a soft, elegant look to your photos.

If a floor-length dress isn’t your style, I recommend choosing one that reaches at least your ankles. In my experience, ankle-length and maxi dresses almost always photograph better than shorter styles because they create cleaner lines and keep the focus on you.

Of course, there are always exceptions, but if you’re deciding between two similar dresses, I’d usually recommend the longer one.

One of my favorite ways to save money is shopping secondhand. Check sites like Poshmark and Facebook Marketplace, where you can often find gently used maternity dresses, including brands like Reclamation and Worth Collective, for much less than buying new.

If buying new fits your budget, Etsy also has beautiful dresses in a wide range of prices.

Personally, I’d rather see someone buy a high-quality secondhand dress than purchase a brand-new dress made from inexpensive fabrics. The quality of the material really does make a difference in photos. Softer, better-made fabrics tend to drape more naturally and create a more polished look.

Shop Local Around Tampa

If you’d rather try dresses on before buying, you may have luck at:
